Disney+ has taken advantage of the ongoing 2023 Annecy Festival in France to release exciting news about their upcoming animation projects. The online streaming platform recently unveiled a trailer and the release date of Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, an anthology animated series that celebrates Black culture in different parts of Africa. With an emphasis on sci-fi stories, the series bears a striking resemblance to Love, Death + Robots, but with technology and fantasy themes. All ten short films were directed by a visionary new generation of African filmmakers, tapping into the Afrofuturism phenomenon made popular by Marvel’s Black Panther. Disney+ executive, Michael Paull, expressed the company’s commitment to partnering with talented filmmakers globally to deliver fresh and authentic content that reflects the world from unique perspectives.
Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, which premieres on July 5, features ten animated short films with runtime of approximately ten minutes each. The project initially featured over 70 animation creators who pitched their ideas for short films, before being narrowed down to the ten projects which hail from several African countries. Peter Ramsey, co-director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, worked on the series as an executive producer. Tendayi Nyeke, supervising producer from Triggerfish, explained that Kizazi Moto translates to “fire generation” in Swahili, while “Moto” means “fire” in several other African languages, capturing the essence of the project from across the continent. Fans can binge-watch the series or jump around to their favorite episodes. Watch the trailer below to set the excitement in motion.
