CD Projekt Red, Maker of Cyberpunk 2077, Denies Speculations of Sony’s Acquisition.

CD Projekt Red, the renowned developers behind The Witcher games and Cyberpunk 2077, have strongly refuted recent rumours that suggest Sony is planning to acquire the game developer. Initially, there were claims that Sony was seeking to bolster their acquisition game at a ‘completely new level,’ which in turn had sparked rumours of CD Projekt Red’s impending acquisition. However, CD Projekt Red CEO, Adam Kiciński, has since clarified that nothing has changed on their end, and the company is not for sale. For the time being, CD Projekt Red has multiple projects in development, including the eagerly awaited Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion, which is expected to be showcased at the Summer Game Fest’s Play Days event. Additionally, CD Projekt Red is committed to remaining independent and continue following its own path.

Despite the recent acquisition rumours, CD Projekt Red’s upcoming projects remain on track. The Witcher multiplayer game — codenamed Sirius — recently underwent a significant overhaul, leading to a developmental restart and 29 layoffs at The Molasses Flood, but the project has been re-evaluated and is not cancelled. CD Projekt Red is also working on a brand-new The Witcher trilogy, with plans to release the entire saga within six years of the first title. Another project in development is an open-world remake of the original 2007 The Witcher game by Polish studio Fool’s Theory, comprising veteran staff from the series.

These acquisition rumours were not limited to CD Projekt Red, as leaker Liz claimed that Days Gone 2 is in development at Sony, only to be quickly denied by director Jeff Ross, stating it was impossible as too much time had passed and over 90 people from the original Bend Studio had left. On a related note, Sony recently acquired Firewalk Studios to help build an ‘original AAA multiplayer game’ for PS5 and PC. Their other recent buyouts include Destiny creator Bungie, Returnal developer Housemarque, porting experts Nixxes Software, and Bluepoint Games.
