Post-Filming, Love’s Blindness Harms Both Marriages and Mental Health

Love Is Blind has become a well-known reality dating show on Netflix, captivating audiences with its unique premise. Singles are matched with potential partners, but the catch is that they don’t even get to see their match until they’ve already agreed to marry them. The couples spend time in separate pods and have blind dates until an emotional connection is established. Once engaged, the couples must navigate through other obstacles, including their honeymoon, moving in together, and facing the big decision of whether to say, “I do” or “I don’t” at the altar.

However, while the show does provide an albeit entertaining viewing experience, it has been criticized for the extreme conditions it places on its contestants. Contestants are subjected to a plethora of rules, including no physical contact or communication with anyone until they agree to an engagement and men and women are housed separately. Furthermore, they must keep their relationships a secret until the show airs, even from their families until after the honeymoon. Sleeping arrangements are minimal, with some reporting only four hours of sleep a night across the ten-day stint in the pods. The production requires the contestants to film for up to 20 hours every day, all of this combined with a lack of food and the temptation of alcohol – a recipe for a mental breakdown.

Some previous contestants, including Nick Thompson and Danielle Ruhl from the show’s second season, have spoken out about the adverse effects of these harsh conditions. Nick has since created a non-profit foundation, UCAN Foundation, to provide mental health support to reality TV stars. Danielle has opened up about her mental health struggles and how they were not taken seriously enough by the production team while filming. Briana Holmes, another season one contestant, eventually quit the show, citing the long hours, lack of sleep, and constant push for alcohol as reasons for her decision.

Despite some success stories, including the season one couple Amber Pike and Matt Barnett, who are celebrating their four-year anniversary together, many have voiced their concerns. Amber even stated on Instagram that they don’t watch the show and that they are together despite the show, not because of it. The lack of pay for contestants – $1,000 per week flat rate – has led to lawsuits filed against Netflix for inhumane conditions on set, with suggestions that poor pay and sleep-deprived contestants may add to the emotionally charged atmosphere of the show.

While Love is Blind may make for entertaining viewing, the conditions under which contestants are placed highlight a concerning trend in reality television. It’s time to reassess and prioritize the mental and physical well-being of contestants rather than a dramatic storyline.
