Cancellation of E3 2023

E3 2023, the highly anticipated annual video game extravaganza, has unfortunately been cancelled. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has confirmed this disappointing news on Twitter, following a report from IGN based on emails sent to its members. It appears that the 2023 edition of E3 did not generate enough sustained interest to warrant its execution, in either physical or digital form. ESA stated that despite the beloved brand that E3 is, it would not be able to showcase the true size and strength of the gaming industry this year.

In response to IGN’s report, E3 2023 organizer ReedPop released a public statement expressing the difficulty of the decision. Kyle Marsden-Kish, Global VP of gaming at ReedPop, emphasized that the cancellation was necessary for the benefit of the industry and E3 itself. He noted that many publishers and developers who had shown interest in the event would not have had playable demos prepared for showcase. ReedPop apologized to those who committed to E3 2023, acknowledging that they deserved a proper showcase that met their expectations based on ReedPop’s event experiences.

The in-person E3 2023 was scheduled to take place from June 13-16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, marking the return to physicality after the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. However, it followed a virtual format in 2021 and was cancelled altogether in 2022.

Recent announcements from major players in the gaming industry have further contributed to the setback. Ubisoft, initially committed to participating in E3 2023, decided to withdraw and organize its own separate event called Ubisoft Forward Live on June 12 in LA. Tencent and Yakuza publisher Sega also confirmed their absence from E3.

Meanwhile, Microsoft will be hosting an Xbox Games Showcase on June 11, featuring an in-depth look at Bethesda’s highly anticipated sci-fi RPG, Starfield. Nintendo and PlayStation will continue their online events to showcase new games and updates. Additionally, there is the possibility of collaboration with Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest has gained prominence as the industry’s go-to destination for major game reveals and news. As a digital-only event, publishers no longer need to invest large sums in securing physical booths. The festival is set to commence on June 8 and has already secured Xbox and Ubisoft as key highlights, leaving E3 in its wake. Interestingly, the Summer Game Fest released its new promotional trailer right after ESA’s announcement.

While E3’s cancellation comes as a disappointment, gamers can still look forward to exciting announcements and showcases through alternate events such as Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase, Nintendo and PlayStation’s online presentations, and the Summer Game Fest. The gaming community remains eagerly engaged, adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of virtual experiences.
