Reports suggest that Google may include USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode in its upcoming Pixel 8 lineup, as mentioned by Android researcher and journalist Mishaal Rahman on Twitter. This hardware addition could potentially enable a PC-like desktop interface to be launched with Google’s new phones later this year.
Android 14 seems to add support for a new version of the USB Gadget HAL: v2.0 can report whether a connected USB-C cable supports DP Alt Mode.
May we finally get a Pixel with video output via USB-C? Wishful thinking on my part, but with all the recent desktop mode improvements..

It’s important to note that current Pixel devices do not have DisplayPort Alt Mode support, which is essential for video output via USB-C. On the other hand, manufacturers like Samsung and Motorola have already incorporated this capability in their devices, unlocking their DeX and Ready For interfaces, respectively.
The idea behind this development is that smartphones have become powerful enough to utilize their computing capabilities for more than just social media scrolling. With an external monitor, optimized interface, mouse, and keyboard, it’s possible to transform a smartphone into a fully functional workstation.
While it remains uncertain if Google will fully embrace a desktop interface, there are positive signs. The company has been actively improving mouse and trackpad support in recent Android 14 builds.
However, Google may have been hesitant in introducing PC-like interface elements to Android due to concerns about competing with its own ChromeOS operating system. Nonetheless, the appeal of using a smartphone as a PC by docking it to a monitor is hard to resist.
