Internet adoption rate climbs to 93 pct, AI usage rate rises y-o-y

Macau’s internet adoption rate has increased from 33 per cent in 2001 to 93 per cent in 2024, surpassing the global average and is among the top in Asia, according to the Macao Association for Internet Research (MAIR).

The research report titled “Internet Usage Trends in Macao,” published on Tuesday, revealed that the adoption rate for mobile internet stands at 91 per cent, nearly on par with the overall internet adoption rate.

The association highlighted that the digital divide index has narrowed to near zero, indicating equal opportunities for internet access among all segments of the local population.

In terms of consumption, the online shopping rate among adult netizens continues to rise, reaching 76 per cent in 2024.

Survey results show that Taobao is the main platform for online shopping, while skin care or daily necessities are the most frequently purchased items. Among the surveyed online shoppers, 20 per cent of them have engaged in live streaming shopping.

Mobile payment has become the primary payment method for both online and offline purchases, with mobile payment rates exceeding 80 per cent.

Regarding the usage of artificial intelligence (AI), the research team found out that over 60 per cent of netizens were aware of generative AI, while nearly 30 per cent had used it, marking an increase in both awareness and usage rates compared to last year.

Nearly half of netizens expressed their willingness to embrace generative AI in the future, with the most expected application being the enhancement of learning or efficiency.

The researchers suggest that Macau should capitalise on its widespread internet adoption to promote economic development, foster social progress, and improve residents’ livelihood.

“For instance, promoting the development of Macau’s digital economy by encouraging businesses and organisations to utilise the internet and big data technology to enhance productivity and innovation capabilities,” the researchers wrote.
