Blizzard Confirms the Active Development of Two Expansions for Diablo IV

Diablo IV has launched on all platforms, but developer Blizzard is already working on two expansions, according to general manager Rod Fergusson in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. While finishing up season one and working on season two, development is well underway for the first expansion, and plans for the second expansion are set to begin. Diablo IV was designed with a live-service format in mind, with consistent content releases scheduled in seasonal updates, a significant upgrade from Diablo III’s 11-year-old model, which was eventually abandoned.

In a previous interview with IGN, Fergusson revealed that Diablo IV’s expansions will feature narrative questlines, with richer context surrounding a season’s release and a themed approach resulting in new cosmetics and gameplay mechanics. The narrative extensions will not affect the main campaign and instead provide additional stories set within the open world. In comparison, Diablo II and Diablo III both had one large expansion, with supplemental patches and content updates provided afterward. The Diablo IV team plans to update the game with new content for years to come, including a battle pass with only cosmetic items.

Diablo IV is currently in its pre-season, with a limited inventory shop open for purchase. As season one approaches, the battle pass and a more extensive shop with themed items will become available. The in-game shop will use an intelligence system to recommend items based on the character class being played. The pre-season will act as a testing period as the development team works on the major update.

Last week, Blizzard announced an addition aimed at the more competitive players, in which the first 1,000 players to reach level 100 on Hardcore mode will have their names or battle tags engraved on a statue of Lilith. Currently, it has not been revealed where the statue will be kept or what purpose it will serve, but it is likely to be located at the main headquarters. Hardcore Mode involves permadeath for the player’s character, forcing them to start all over again if they die. The difficulty level is high.

In May, the company highlighted Diablo IV’s endgame progression and its Capstone and Nightmare Dungeons, designed to keep players engaged long after the main campaign is completed. Players can repeatedly run Capstone Dungeons to collect various loot and get stronger. Nightmare Dungeons allow players to choose from 120+ dungeons in the Sanctuary and escalate difficulty by adding difficult objectives, increased enemy counts, and portals.

Diablo IV is available on PC via Battle.net, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
