The renowned sunshine is eagerly awaited by honey bees in California.

The return of sunshine has finally enticed bees out of their hives in California, after weeks of cold temperatures and grey skies had kept them indoors. Despite the fantastic superbloom of flowers that had bloomed after the exceptionally wet winter, beekeepers had been concerned that the lack of sun would lead to a poor honey harvest. The bees are reluctant to fly in cold and damp weather, and temperatures of around 20 Celsius have not been helping matters. The weather in California has failed to improve since the extensive rainfall of the winter and the subsequent formation of atmospheric rivers. These downpours filled reservoirs and rivers but caused many issues for honeybees, with thousands starving to death. Nevertheless, the recent superbloom, where hillsides exploded into a riot of oranges, yellows, purples and whites, should be ideal for the bees. However, May was dull, and June began with gloom, causing the bees to stay put in their hives. If the weather continues to improve, beekeepers are hopeful of a bumper harvest of 100 pounds of honey per hive over the next six weeks.
