Aqara Introduces Its Inaugural Matter Sensor: A Versatile Button for Doors and Windows

Aqara has launched its first sensor compatible with the Matter-over-Thread technology. The Door and Window Sensor P2 can be purchased at a price of $29.99 / £29.99 / €32.99. This sensor seamlessly integrates into existing Matter-enabled smart homes and does not require an Aqara hub to operate. However, if paired with Aqara’s upcoming Hub M3, users can access additional features such as a built-in programmable button.

The Door and Window Sensor P2 uses a magnet to detect whether a window or door is open or closed. This feature can be used in various smart home automations, including enhancing security, reminding users to close windows during rain, or alerting them when a freezer door has been left open for too long. The sensor comes with an adhesive mount that can be easily removed without causing damage to the wall. It also includes a thin magnetic plate for alternative mounting options.

The sensor’s design is intentionally plain and nondescript, without any visible logos or wordmarks. This allows users to install multiple sensors around their house without drawing attention to them. However, it’s worth noting that there is a small Matter logo and pairing code hidden on the inner edge of the sensor.

The Door and Window Sensor P2 features a large-capacity 1,400mAh CR123 battery, making it longer-lasting than Aqara’s Zigbee-based sensor. Its dimensions are 77 x 22 x 22mm, similar to the width of a typical smartphone. Aqara does not provide specific details about battery longevity, as it depends on factors such as polling frequency and the apps and border router it connects to.

Unlike the previous Zigbee-based sensor that required an Aqara hub, the Thread-based P2 sensor can work with any Matter-enabled Thread border router. This allows it to seamlessly integrate into any Matter-enabled ecosystem, such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and others. Users may already have a Thread border router in their homes, such as a fourth-gen Echo, Apple TV 4K, or second-gen Nest Hub.

Aqara plans to release its first Thread border router, the Hub M3, in early 2024, along with an update to the Aqara Home app to support Matter. The Door and Window P2 sensors paired with the Hub M3 will gain additional features, including tamper alerts, adjustable sensitivity, and a programmable button for customized home scenes or automations. Until then, the button on the main unit is limited to device setup and reset.

Aqara originally teased the Door and Window Sensor P2 alongside a Thread-enabled Motion and Light Sensor P2 at CES in January 2022. The motion sensor’s release has been delayed from the initial plan of early 2023 and is now scheduled for later this year.

Aqara is actively working on adding Matter support to its existing hubs, allowing seamless integration with its range of legacy Zigbee devices. The company also has plans to release various smart sensors, dimmer switches, smart plugs, and lights compatible with Thread technology in the future.
