Amazon Canada has announced its plans to open a new fulfillment centre in Southwold Township, Ontario. This expansion is set to bring positive economic and social impact to the area.
The 2-million sq. ft. fulfillment centre, known as YXU-1, will be located on the former site of the Ford auto plant on Colonel Talbot Road. It is scheduled to open its doors on October 1st, 2023.
The Township of Southwold Mayor, Grant Jones, expressed excitement about Amazon’s presence in the community. He stated, “We’re thrilled to have Amazon join our community and are looking forward to the opportunities it will bring to our region. The revitalization of the site will create new prospects for our local residents.”
In preparation for the opening, Amazon plans to hire over 1,000 regular full-time employees starting in September. These employees will work alongside advanced Amazon Robotics technology, enabling the processing of up to 750,000 items daily.
As operations ramp up early next year, Amazon Canada expects to hire even more workers in addition to the initial 1,000 positions. The starting wage for these roles will be approximately $20 per hour. Employees will also receive benefits such as medical, vision, and dental coverage, as well as a group RRSP plan.
