Alarm as seawater heats up off Florida Keys, imperiling reef

The soaring temperatures of the seawater off the coast of Florida are posing a serious threat to the world’s third-largest barrier reef. To protect the coral from the dangerous water conditions, Neufeld’s nonprofit group, along with other local organizations, is collecting genetic strains of coral from nurseries and relocating them to land-based facilities where the water parameters can be controlled. This move aims to ensure the survival of the reef-based sea life.

It also threatens the tourism industry in the Florida Keys, which heavily relies on the attraction of the barrier reef. Sport fishermen, a significant segment of the tourism industry in the Keys, may reconsider visiting the area if the decline of the coral reefs continues.
