PvP backstabs are back on the menu thanks to Elden Ring’s latest patch

The most recent balance patch for Elden Ring has sparked both joy and disappointment within the PvP community. The era of backstabs has arrived.

So, what exactly happened? Well, if we take a look at the recent patch notes, a particular point stands out as crucial to this exciting new backstab-focused future. The statement “Critical hit angles have been extended” means that the game is now more forgiving in terms of positioning for triggering the backstab animation on enemies. While this enhancement is beneficial in PvE scenarios, it significantly simplifies backstabbing other players in PvP situations where rapid movement and netcode issues come into play.

For a visual representation of what this change entails, we can turn to the Reddit user Lagideath2 and their post “Yep, DS3 backstabs are back.” This post takes us back in time, reminiscing about late-night battles in Irithyl and demonstrating a player managing to trigger the backstab animation on their opponent despite a full 180-degree turn. Impressive, indeed.

Many players are elated by this news, as it offers a refreshing alternative to the current meta of heavy barriers and wild swings. With backstabs becoming easier to execute, builds focused on critical damage are now more viable than ever before. User EconomyFly5920 confidently declares, “Dark Souls 3, here I come!”

However, not everyone shares the same level of enthusiasm. User ElNido expresses dissatisfaction, stating, “Not sure if I’m gonna get downvoted or not, but here it goes: backstab fishing is not a fun meta to play against. He did more than 50% of the dude’s health bar in a duel because of that. The fight is already over as long as the backstabber doesn’t play terribly.”

If you’re an Elden Ring player, what are your thoughts on this change? Additionally, if you have experience as a dedicated PvPer in previous Souls games, we’d love to hear about your encounters with online backstabs. Share your thoughts and experiences below!
