AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU: A Potential Contender to Challenge Intel’s Dominance

Reports circulating in the tech community suggest that the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D CPU has made an appearance in the market, accompanied by some potential specifications.

The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is speculated to be built on the Zen 4 core architecture with 16 cores, 32 threads, and support for PBO overclocking and tuning capabilities. The source, known for their technology insights on Weibo (via Twitter user HXL), mentioned the possibility of the processor featuring a 3D V-Cache with 128 MB capacities. This 3D V-Cache is expected to offer a “dual-CCD configuration with 64 MB of stacked cache on one of the two CCDs and the rest of the 64 MB cache coming from the two Zen 4 dies.”

Another Twitter user, Everest, seems to have discovered additional specifications through an Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 laptop spec sheet. The spec sheet reveals clock speeds reaching up to 5.4 GHz and a configurable TDP ranging between 55W and 75W.

Based on the leaked information, it is likely that the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D will cater to high-end laptops. The mentioned ROG Strix Scar 17 features an Nvidia RTX 4090, 32GB of DDR5 memory, and a 240Hz IPS display. Considering these components, the laptop is listed by an Australian retailer for approximately AU$5,599 (equivalent to $3,780 / £2,945), which explains the relatively high price tag.

AMD could rival Intel’s dominance

What makes this rumor particularly intriguing is that, based on the potential specifications, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D has the potential to challenge Intel’s Raptor Lake-HX and the upcoming 14th-gen CPU refresh. This is especially noteworthy considering the success of the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D. Such potential sets the stage for the 7945HX3D to be considered one of the most impressive CPUs, not only among AMD processors but also in the broader market.

Pricing, however, may pose as a major obstacle for the 7945HX3D. The 7950X3D is priced at $699, which is higher than the suggested retail price of the Intel Core i9-13900K ($589 / £699 / AU$929). Despite its stellar performance, convincing budget-conscious PC gamers to invest in these CPUs could prove challenging, as the upgrade would primarily make sense for those with an AMD Zen 3 or 11th-gen Intel processor or earlier. Buyers on a budget would likely seek more affordable alternatives.
