Destructoid: Call of Duty’s Ingenious Countermeasure Against Cheaters—Imaginary Enemies

Is the person currently in the room with us?

Activision has implemented a unique anti-cheating strategy called “Hallucination” in their game, Call of Duty. “Mitigation” is the term used by Team Ricochet, the anti-cheating department of COD, to refer to measures that identify and reduce cheating. Hallucination creates imaginary enemies in the cheaters’ field of view, keeping them occupied while innocent players engage in gameplay.

According to Ricochet, the decoys created by Hallucination are undetectable by legitimate players and have no impact on their aim, progression, end of match stats, or overall gameplay experience. However, they serve to disorient cheaters in various ways.

If a player is cheating, the decoys will behave and appear like real players in the cheater’s cheating software. The game strategically places these decoys near suspicious players, revealing their true colors when they shoot at them.

Why not simply ban cheaters outright?

Team Ricochet does ban many cheaters every day, but banning alone may not be the most effective course of action in all cases. Cheating technology is constantly evolving, and sometimes it’s better to gather information about the cheats being used before taking drastic measures. Mitigations like Hallucination allow innocent players to enjoy uninterrupted gameplay while collecting valuable data on cheaters.

Additionally, from my perspective, this is not only a valid approach alongside banning but also quite amusing. I can’t help but appreciate the irony when cheaters unwittingly become easy targets, similar to a naïve guard from MGSV, despite signing up to play as Snake.

Activision is known for trolling cheaters. In the past, they made innocent players invisible to cheaters, pitted suspected cheaters against each other, made cheaters’ weapons fire blanks, and even disarmed cheaters, preventing them from using melee combat. However, this new Mitigation, reminiscent of Uncharted 3’s Djinn-induced trip, may just take the prize for the most innovative anti-cheating strategy.
