According to a recent report from Ookla, SpaceX’s Starlink has increased internet speeds in Canada. The download speeds have gone up by 28Mbps in the last two quarters, Q4 2022 and Q1 2023, although they have decreased by 3Mbps year over year from Q1 2022 to Q1 2023. Despite this, Starlink has the fastest satellite service in North America with a download speed of 93.97Mbps, 40 percent faster than the U.S. with a download speed of 66.59Mbps, and an average download speed of 56.42Mbps in Mexico over the past quarter. Viasat has also made progress in Canada, with download speeds increasing from 24.36Mbps in Q3 2022 to 48.24Mbps in Q1 2023.
However, when it comes to upload speeds, all satellite providers fall behind fixed broadband providers. Still, among the satellite providers analyzed by Ookla, Starlink Canada reported the fastest satellite upload speed at 9.60Mbps. The report highlights that Starlink is becoming an increasingly popular option for rural residents in Canada, who can now purchase hardware for 70 percent off the regular price.
