Science: Optimal Timing for COVID Booster Shot

A pharmacist administered a Covid-19 booster shot to seniors at a clinic in Chicago, as announced by a trio of recent updates. President Joe Biden signed a resolution ending the Covid-19 national emergency, while the White House launched the $5 billion Project Next Gen to develop the new generation of vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now permits new boosters for older adults and immunocompromised patients. The updates show the continued threat of Covid-19 to certain groups and look towards the future. Experts suggest that high-risk individuals should receive priority access to a bivalent booster shot, which half protects against the original vaccine strain and half against the omicron strain. They also suggest seeking a doctor’s advice on timing for the booster shot since the protection against severe infection decreases over time. Those who are not older or immunocompromised and have a healthy immune system can probably forgo a second bivalent booster. People who are unvaccinated or have only received monovalent boosters should get a first bivalent booster. To address booster hesitancy or lack of knowledge about updated recommendations, experts suggest filling knowledge gaps and focusing outreach on vulnerable groups. With the emergency status lifted, those without insurance may face out-of-pocket costs for at-home testing and treatment. The Biden administration announced a $1.1 billion program to purchase vaccines for the uninsured, but the lack of awareness about this initiative and its temporary nature raises questions about access concerns being fully resolved. Minority groups will be disproportionately impacted without a more permanent solution.
