Striving for Authentic Natural Hues: A Journey

Co-founders Jim Ajioka (CSO, left) and Orr Yarkoni (CEO, right) are the masterminds behind Colorifix, a startup that aims to revolutionize the industrial dyeing process using bacteria. Traditionally, dyeing clothes involved heating a mixture of water, dye, fabric, and fixatives, which were often vinegar or urine. While earthy colors could be achieved using plant and mineral-based dyes, alchemists wanted more vibrant and unusual colors resulting in the creation of iconic and bizarre ingredients such as Prussian blue from carmine contaminated with blood and Tyrian purple from the mucus of sea snails. Industrial dyeing today involves chemically synthesizing most dyes and fixatives from petroleum that are harmful to the environment. Colorifix is genetically engineering specific strains of bacteria to synthesize pigments and fix them into fabrics. The startup analyzes pigments found in nature using comprehensive data analysis and conducts several tests to ensure their products are safe for the environment and human health. The fashion industry seems receptive, with over 120 brands expressing interest in genetically modified bacteria. Colorifix raised £18M from a Series B funding round led by H&M’s investment arm, CO:LAB and has collaborated with PANGIA and H&M for product launches. The startup’s main focus is engineering bacteria, but they intend to disrupt the biotech industry’s business model as well.
