Xbox Game Pass: Outer Wilds Among Nine Games Leaving Service on New Year’s Day

Outer Wilds, the critically acclaimed time loop adventure game developed by Mobius Digital, is among the nine titles scheduled to leave Xbox Game Pass at the start of the upcoming year. While Microsoft’s subscription service regularly refreshes its game library on a monthly basis, the removal of these specific games was not mentioned in the latest Xbox blog. However, upon checking the Xbox app’s “Leaving Soon” section, it is evident that nine games will be departing the service on January 1, 2023. Given that this information is displayed in the official Xbox app, it can be deemed as official confirmation.

As one of the standout titles leaving Game Pass, Outer Wilds presents a unique and intriguing premise. Players assume the role of an unnamed space explorer trapped in a never-ending time loop. Every 22 minutes, the star of the solar system goes supernova, causing the planets and particles to revert back to their original states. It’s important not to confuse this game with The Outer Worlds, another space-themed RPG available on Game Pass. In Outer Wilds, the objective is to explore the secrets left behind by an extinct civilization and solve the overarching mystery.

Last July, Outer Wilds received an upgrade for Xbox Series S/X via Game Pass, enabling players to experience it at a smooth 60 frames per second. However, this enhanced version of the game will soon be leaving the platform.

Among the other notable titles departing the service is Scarlet Nexus, developed by Square Enix. In this game, players harness psychokinetic powers to engage in thrilling combat segments and uncover the mysteries of a futuristic world known as Brain Punk. Additionally, The Pedestrian, which recently became available on PlayStation as part of the PS Plus Extra and Deluxe catalogue, will also be leaving Game Pass on January 1.

Earlier this month, Xbox Game Pass introduced Hello Neighbor 2 to its subscription service, granting users day-one access to the game. In Hello Neighbor 2, you once again find yourself in Raven Brooks, embodying an investigative journalist spying on your creepy neighbor. While this particular title is limited to single-player mode, its multiplayer spin-off, Secret Neighbor, will be removed from Game Pass on New Year’s Day.

Starting from January 1, 2023, Xbox Game Pass will say goodbye to the following nine games:

You have the option to purchase all of these games at a 20 percent discount before they leave Game Pass permanently. Additionally, Microsoft is currently hosting its annual Xbox Countdown Sale, which runs until January 2, 2023. The sale offers substantial discounts on numerous titles, including Elden Ring, Gotham Knights: Deluxe Edition, and Need for Speed Unbound, which are receiving their first discounts since their initial launch.

In December, Xbox Game Pass introduced 11 exciting additions to its lineup, including three day-one launches: Hello Neighbor 2, Justin Roiland’s High on Life, and the retro-styled RPG Chained Echoes. The catalog also features the highly regarded Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, where players can experience comedic interpretations of all nine episodes in the epic film series. Lastly, Metal: Helsinger, a rhythm-based demon-slaying experience, has finally arrived on Xbox One.
