This extraction shooter pays homage to a classic Bungie game. Although the announcement was made back in May, specific details have been scarce as the team goes into a period of temporary secrecy.
However, if you’ve been following Bungie closely, you may have heard whispers of another enigmatic project they have in the pipeline: Matter. Bungie filed a trademark for Matter in 2018 and has dropped intriguing hints about its nature, describing it as a “whimsical” loot game in job advertisements.
Now, thanks to the ongoing FTC trial involving Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Xbox has unveiled a list of other studios and publishers they considered acquiring before Activision Blizzard, Bungie being one of them.
Within this disclosure, as reported by IGN, Microsoft provided a general overview of Bungie, including its headcount, future expansion plans, recognized games, and undisclosed projects currently in development.
One of these undisclosed projects is Matter, which Microsoft expects to be released in 2025. It’s worth noting that Marathon is not mentioned in the filing, and there is no reference to any Destiny 2 expansion beyond Beyond Light, which released in 2020. This suggests that Microsoft may not have been aware of Marathon’s existence at the time of creating the document, otherwise they would have included it as an “unannounced new game” in the disclosure.
Nevertheless, if Matter is indeed aiming for a 2025 release, it is possible that we may not have to wait much longer for a reveal or teaser. It’s also important to consider that Matter could be a working title, and the game may have a different official title – although Bungie has a penchant for using single-word titles for their games.
