Why Malaysia is Taking Legal Action against Meta: Key Factors Explained

Malaysian authorities have announced their intention to take legal action against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, for its failure to remove “undesirable” content from the social media platform. Despite repeated requests, Meta has not taken sufficient action to address the issue. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stated that this action is necessary to promote accountability for cybersecurity and enhance consumer protection against online harms, including fraudulent activities and scams.

The MCMC further highlighted that Meta has not fully cooperated with efforts to remove such content and has responded slowly and unsatisfactorily. Due to the increasing public concern and scrutiny, the MCMC stated that they have no choice but to take definitive steps or legal action against Meta.

According to reports, Facebook is the largest social media platform in Malaysia, with an estimated 60% of the population having an account. This regulatory scrutiny of big social media firms like Meta, YouTube (owned by Google), and TikTok is not unique to Malaysia and has been seen in multiple countries and regions.

In India, big digital and social media platforms with over 5 million users are required to publish monthly reports, as per the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. In its latest monthly report, Facebook stated that it had removed 27.7 million pieces of content across 13 policies for Facebook between April 1-30.

These measures taken by Malaysia and the regulatory actions against social media platforms reflect the growing concern for cybersecurity, consumer protection, and the need for accountability in the digital sphere.
