Where Is Alex’s Sister, June, in ‘Red, White & Royal Blue?’

If you’re not head over heels for Red, White & Royal Blue, then you’re seriously missing out. The screen adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel is making waves with its refreshingly modern take on topics like same-sex romance, the American Executive branch, and the complexities of dating someone from the British Royal Family.

However, despite the film’s warm reception, fans of the book are left questioning: Where is June Claremont-Diaz in Red, White & Royal Blue? In the novel, June plays multiple roles in Alex’s life: she’s his sister, his friend, and his confidante. She even pretends to date Henry when the media becomes too intrusive in their relationship.

Yet, in the movie, June is notably absent.

This isn’t a surprising turn of events. Adapting a 421-page book into a two-hour film inevitably leads to some sacrifices. In June Claremont-Diaz’s case, her character underwent a narrative transformation, with her camaraderie and reliability merged into the character of Nora, portrayed by Rachel Hilson in the film. Although Nora also exists in the book as Alex’s friend, she has a different dynamic, more like a friend he once dated.

By combining aspects of June’s character, Nora becomes a fusion of characters on screen, providing emotional support to Alex and campaign expertise to his mother’s re-election efforts. Merging two characters into one was a logical choice for Red, White & Royal Blue, the directorial debut of Matthew Lopez—an acclaimed writer who has received Olivier, Tony, and GLAAD Awards. With an abundance of source material and a plethora of emotional depth to explore, the rookie director faced the daunting task of trimming over an hour of story from the film before it could hit theaters.

But, if you insist on finding an explanation within the story for June’s absence, we can always make one up. Let’s say she was abducted by the same group that took Elizabeth Moss at the end of season four of The West Wing. There you have it—problem solved.
