What Is Disease X? U.K. Establishes VDEC, New Vaccine Research Center

The Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre (VDEC) is set to be established at the U.K. Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) Porton Down campus in Wiltshire to combat the threat of unknown pathogens, including “Disease X,” which refers to the potential virus or pathogen that could cause the next pandemic. The aim of VDEC is to develop and evaluate vaccines that can mitigate the harm caused by vaccine-preventable diseases, including both known and new pathogens with pandemic potential.

The term “Disease X” recently trended on social media, likely due to the UKHSA press release about the establishment of VDEC, which mentioned preparations to tackle this unknown disease. However, Disease X is not a new concept and was already included in the World Health Organization’s Blueprint list of priority diseases. The list also included the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), both of which caused outbreaks in the past. The politicization of the origins of SARS-CoV-2 should not overshadow the fact that viruses and other pathogens constantly pose a threat to humans. It is crucial for society to be prepared and prevent future outbreaks.

VDEC will have a laboratory space of over 2,800 square meters at Porton Down, co-located with Defense Science and Technology Laboratory facilities. It will bring together over 200 scientists working on around 100 different projects. The center’s efforts will include the development and scaling up of vaccine efficacy tests, the creation of a vaccine against Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and the development and testing of influenza vaccines.

In addition to VDEC’s work, society can take other measures to prepare for unknown pathogens. This includes developing better surveillance systems to monitor virus activity and the impact of climate change on animal habitats. Outbreak research and manufacturing capacity can also be strengthened. It is important to develop vaccines and treatments for known pathogens, as they can provide valuable insights and preparations for potential future outbreaks. Rather than pointing fingers and making excuses after an outbreak, it is essential to focus on prevention and proactive measures.

In conclusion, the establishment of VDEC is a significant step in the U.K.’s efforts to combat emerging pathogens and prevent future pandemics. By prioritizing research, vaccine development, and preparedness, society can better protect itself from the threats posed by unknown diseases, such as “Disease X.”
