Tesla has recently unveiled its latest version of the Tesla Bot, a humanoid robot that could potentially work alongside factory workers or even replace them. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, first announced the idea in 2021, claiming that it would “eliminate dangerous, repetitive, boring tasks.” The initial prototype was unveiled in September 2022, and now, after a year of development, the robot appears to be making significant progress.
The latest 65-second video showcases the Tesla Bot’s abilities in various settings, from offices to factories assembling the Cybertruck electric pickup. The robotic arm’s motor torque control is seen in action, demonstrating its capability to avoid smashing an egg despite initial appearances.
Furthermore, with onboard cameras and a sensor suite, the robot is programmed to “memorize” environments, allowing for future work in designated areas, and is equipped with built-in AI capabilities. The video displays the robot being trained in this field with human input.
Perhaps the most remarkable demonstration on the video is the Tesla Bot’s adeptness in handling various objects through its robotic hands, a notoriously challenging task for robots. However, the humanoid still lacks the versatility of its Boston Dynamics counterpart, which can perform somersaults.
Although the Tesla Bot is making good progress, it remains uncertain when the electric carmaker might incorporate the robot into its business operations, meaning human workers still have job security for now.
