US Troubles Threaten Microsoft’s Largest Acquisition

The US Federal Trade Commission is currently seeking to impede Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard by requesting a temporary restraining order and injunction from a federal district court before the deal deadline on July 18. The FTC has raised concerns that Microsoft’s acquisition could potentially lead to monopolistic practices, favoring Xbox consoles at the expense of its competitors like Sony. Microsoft has addressed these concerns and even won approval from the EU after partnering with different cloud gaming platforms. However, the FTC has raised a legal challenge, which rests with a US judge who will decide whether to impose a temporary restraining order or preliminary injunction to halt the sale until the outcome of the FTC’s legal challenge. It is also worth noting that the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has already blocked the merger, but Microsoft plans to appeal the decision this summer. If Microsoft fails to close the deal, it will have to pay Activision Blizzard $3 billion in breakup fees.
