Danny Orleans is a corporate magician who brings his unique talents to corporate trade events. Unlike certain executives who make the value of companies disappear, Danny’s magic is all about entertainment and wonder. But sometimes, even a magician can’t escape the tricks of fate.
United Airlines pulls off a magic trick of its own
Recently, Danny boarded a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Newark on his way to a trade show in New York. However, when the plane landed, an unexpected disappearance occurred. Danny’s checked bag, containing $1,500 worth of sound equipment for his show, vanished into thin air. It seemed like United Airlines had mastered the art of making things disappear.
Magically, Danny’s bag was eventually found on the tarmac by the magician himself, exactly where his Apple AirTag had indicated it would be.
Luckily, Danny had attached an Apple AirTag tracker to his bag. Using his iPhone, he tracked the bag’s location and noticed that it was still on the runway even after the plane had landed. After patiently waiting for around 30 minutes, the bag finally moved—but to a different area of the runway. It seemed like the bag was playing its own disappearing act.
Danny joined a long line of passengers facing baggage issues, only to be informed by a United representative that his bag was never checked in and had not made it to Newark. Despite showing the AirTag’s indication of the bag’s position on the Newark runway, the airline employee was unsympathetic and promised to send the bag to Danny’s location within five days. However, he had an important show the next day and limited time in town.
Determined to retrieve his bag, Danny took matters into his own hands. Through further research, he discovered that the bag was near Gate 90, even though his flight had arrived at Gate 113. To reach his bag, Danny purchased a refundable ticket to Boston, making some of his money seemingly disappear. He went through security, made his way to Gate 90, and, much to his relief, found his bag sitting on the tarmac right where the Find My app had indicated.
“It was just sitting there on the tarmac,” Danny recalled. “The most frustrating part was seeing someone pass by the bag without making any effort to retrieve it.”
A loyal flyer despite the magic mishap
Despite the mishap, Danny remains a faithful United Airlines customer, flying with the carrier three to four times a month. He believes in giving credit where it’s due and expressed gratitude towards United Airlines for ultimately refunding the cost of his additional ticket and assisting in retrieving his bag.
Additionally, Danny commended Apple’s AirTags for their reliability in helping him recover his bag multiple times. Interestingly, United Airlines was unaware that Danny had already retrieved his bag and continued to search for it until being informed otherwise.
In the end, the airline acknowledged the situation and released a statement: “We strive to deliver bags on time for everyone. We are delighted to have Mr. Orleans as a valued customer, and we refunded the cost of the extra ticket in light of the circumstances.”
