UK-Based Company to Invest Rs. 30,000 Crore in Setting Up Semiconductor Unit in Odisha

A leading UK-based company is making plans to establish a state-of-the-art semiconductor fabrication unit in Ganjam district, Odisha, with an impressive investment of Rs. 30,000 crore in the initial phase, according to officials. The Indian unit of SRAM & MRAM Group, SRAM & MRAM Technologies and Projects India Pvt Limited, had previously signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government on March 26 to set up this semiconductor facility.

The officials from the Indian company, headed by Chairman Guruji Kumaran Swami, visited potential sites near Chhatrapur in the district and held a meeting with the district administration in Chhatrapur to discuss the project. To support and facilitate the establishment of the unit, Ganjam Collector Dibya Jyoti Parida assured the investors of providing all necessary amenities.

Debadutt Singhdeo, the project director of the firm, stated that they have explored various sites, including Tata’s industrial park and private lands, and a technical team from the company will soon finalize the site. Approximately 500 to 800 acres of land are required for the semiconductor unit.

While the company officials visited other districts, they selected the site near Chhatrapur due to its advantageous proximity to Gopalpur port, a dedicated industrial corridor, an airstrip, and a national highway. Additionally, it offers access to clean water and energy, essential requirements for the fabrication unit.

The company’s goal is to establish the unit within two years and create direct employment opportunities for 5,000 individuals. Furthermore, they have plans for future expansion, with an investment of approximately Rs. 2 lakh crore by 2027, as stated by Singhdeo.

The semiconductor unit will primarily focus on producing memory chips used in various electronic devices such as mobile phones, televisions, laptops, air conditioners, and ATMs. Importing semiconductors worth around Rs. 3 lakh crore annually, India aims to reduce its dependence on foreign manufacturers in this sector.

Berhampur MP Chandra Sekhar Sahu commented that this project will significantly contribute to the industrial development of the district. He also highlighted the state’s attractive industrial policy, which has attracted interest from numerous companies.

Sahu emphasized that the proposed unit will generate employment opportunities and fulfill the country’s requirements for semiconductors.
