Twitter Ditches “Birdie” for “X” Logo: Musk Reveals

Early on Sunday morning, Elon Musk made a surprising announcement on his Twitter account. He stated, “And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.” Musk shared an image of a flickering letter “X” and confirmed that the Twitter logo would indeed change. He emphasized that this change should have been made a long time ago.
Following the post of the “X” logo, Musk added, “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll make go live worldwide tomorrow.” However, it’s important to note that Musk often makes impromptu comments on Twitter and revises them later on, so we can only be certain about a new logo once it is introduced.
The news about the logo change first surfaced thanks to Reuters. According to the report, Musk renamed Twitter’s parent company to X Corp. after purchasing the social media platform for $44 billion in October. Musk aims to create a “super app” similar to China’s WeChat, which offers not only social media features but also instant messaging, gaming, mobile payments, and more. WeChat boasts over 1 billion monthly active users, while Twitter currently has approximately 450 million active users worldwide.
Musk’s comments contradict Twitter’s own website, which considers their blue bird trademark to be “our most recognizable asset.” They emphasize how protective they are of it. However, if Musk remains firm in his decision, the beloved Twitter bird may soar away, making room for a single letter. While Twitter was established in 2006, the iconic blue bird logo we all know today wasn’t introduced until 2010. Interestingly, it even has a name—Larry T Bird—named after the legendary Boston Celtics basketball player, Larry Bird.
Although it remains unclear whether Twitter would still refer to its posts as “tweets” if the bird logo is replaced, it’s possible that the term is too deeply ingrained for any significant changes to be made.
