Trailer for ‘The Chosen One’: Experience a Miraculous Event

Despite the mixed results of previous adaptations of Mark Millar’s work, such as “Jupiter’s Legacy,” Netflix is continuing its foray into Millarworld projects. The latest addition is “The Chosen One,” based on Millar and Peter Gross’s “American Jesus.” Originally titled “Chosen” and released in 2004, the comic book follows a twelve-year-old boy who discovers he has the powers of Jesus Christ and is destined to face the Antichrist. After being announced in 2018, the series is finally set to premiere on Netflix on August 16, with the release of a trailer.

Originally planned as a film directed by Matthew Vaughn, the big-screen adaptation of “American Jesus” fell through. However, in 2017, Netflix acquired the rights to Millarworld and announced a lineup of shows and films based on Millar’s properties, including “American Jesus.” The series takes place in Mexico, and according to Millar, the change in location adds authenticity to the mythological elements and makes the apocalyptic aspects more realistic. The show’s synopsis is as follows:

Jodie, a twelve-year-old boy in Baja California, suddenly discovers he has Jesus-like powers: he can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! As the Evangelical and the Yaquí leaders in town try to get him to use his powers to save mankind, all Jodie wants to do is impress the girl he likes and stand up to his bullies. As Jodie struggles and eventually comes to terms with his destiny, everything gets thrown for a loop when he realizes he discovers the truth around his identity.

The upcoming series stars Tenoch Huerta and Dianna Agron, with Everado Gout and Leopoldo Gout as the co-showrunners. Everado Gout also serves as the show’s director, having previously worked with Netflix on an episode of Marvel’s “Luke Cage.”

What’s Next for Millarworld?

“The Chosen One” (“El Elegido” in Spanish) joins the roster of Millarworld adaptations on Netflix, following “Jupiter’s Legacy” and an anime adaption of “Super Crooks.” Another project in development is “The Magic Order,” which is said to be Netflix’s answer to “Harry Potter.” The story revolves around five families with magical powers who are determined to protect the world from dangerous threats. Additionally, Mark Millar has mentioned plans to bring “Reborn,” “Empress,” “Huck,” “Sharkey The Bounty Hunter,” and “Prodigy” to the screen, though updates on these projects have been scarce.

“The Chosen One” is set to premiere on Netflix on August 16. Watch the trailer below:
