Tom Clancy Didn’t Create This ‘Jack Ryan’ Character

The highly anticipated fourth season of the hit series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” is just around the corner, and fans can rejoice as all their beloved characters are set to make a return. This includes the iconic CIA analyst turned special ops field agent Dr. Jack Ryan, portrayed by the talented John Krasinski, as well as the Acting Director of the CIA, Elizabeth Wright, portrayed by Betty Gabriel. Joining them is James Greer, Ryan’s field boss, played by Wendell Pierce, and his partner in special ops, Mike November, portrayed by Michael Kelly, who will be making his third appearance after debuting in Season 2.

In Season 2, November accompanies Ryan on a mission to track down an assassin in Venezuela, helping him navigate the economically devastated socialist country. What sets November apart is that he is a unique character created specifically for the show, inspired by various characters from Tom Clancy’s source material but never actually appearing in the novels.

Mike November makes his on-screen debut in Season 2, Episode 2, titled “Tertia Optio,” which originally aired in 2019. He is introduced to both Ryan and Greer at the two-minute mark of the episode. Greer is a character that appeared in Clancy’s novels, played by James Earl Jones, and is known for his role as an Admiral in novels like “The Hunt for Red October,” “Patriot Games,” and “Clear and Present Danger.”

In the episode, the meeting takes place after a setback to the operation, where Ryan’s car is bombed while he is being escorted through a Caracas slum. Despite everyone surviving, a Russian sniper kills U.S. Senator Jim Moreno during their escape. November provides Ryan and Greer with information about the assassin’s identity, assisting them in their investigation. During an interrogation, Ryan loses his cool, but November remains calm and collected, displaying his steely demeanor for the first time.

In the original novels by Tom Clancy, there is no character named Mike November. However, November is considered an amalgamation of other characters, particularly John Clark, a former Navy SEAL turned CIA special operations agent, who appears in novels like “Clear and Present Danger,” “The Sum of All Fears,” “Without Remorse,” and “Debt of Honor.” John Clark is a significant character in Clancy’s novels and plays a crucial role in the operations led by Jack Ryan.

Despite not appearing in Clancy’s novels, Mike November’s character adds depth and intrigue to the Jack Ryan TV universe. With a significant gap between Clancy’s last novel and the present, the show’s creators have crafted new storylines each season while paying homage to Clancy’s work. This allows them to engage modern audiences while maintaining the essence of Clancy’s world.

In the upcoming fourth and final season of “Jack Ryan,” fans can expect Mike November to continue providing crucial support and tactical knowledge to Jack Ryan. As a seasoned special operations agent, November will assist Ryan in navigating a new threat from south of the border. He serves as a trusted sounding board for Ryan, offering guidance when he finds himself out of his element. Veteran fans will recall November’s sage advice in Season 2, Episode 4: “If you keep going at this alone, that’s how you’ll end up…alone.”

Alongside James Greer, Elizabeth Wright, and a cast of new characters, Mike November will be ready to lend his expertise whenever Jack Ryan needs him. As one of the few people Ryan trusts implicitly, the thought of November becoming a mole or traitor is unsettling. While there is no indication of this happening, the idea is hard to digest (and highly unlikely).

With the fourth season promising exciting new adventures and the return of beloved characters, fans can eagerly await the premiere of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and indulge in the thrilling world created by the showrunners, Graham Roland and Carlton Cuse.
