The crossover episode featuring Anson Mount (Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Una Chin-Riley), and Ethan Peck (Spock) is finally here. Fans can expect an unexpected event as Jack Quaid’s Boimler and Tawny Newsome’s Mariner from the animated “Lower Decks” make a live-action appearance. The crossover episode airs today, July 22nd, on Paramount+ at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. Additionally, a musical episode titled “Subspace Rhapsody” will be released on Thursday, August 3rd.
Check out the teaser for the upcoming musical episode, which will feature 10 original songs and a special version of the series’ main title. The music and lyrics are composed by Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo) and Tom Polce (Letters to Cleo, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend):
The Ready Room hosted by Wil Wheaton provides a sneak preview of what’s to come. In this episode, Boimler is sent through a time portal from the twenty-fourth century, and Captain Pike and the crew must find a way to return him before causing damage to the timeline. Watch the preview below:
Jonathan Frakes, who directed the crossover episode, expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s so good. I have Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome, who are both amazing. It was such a treat for me because it is a flat-out comedy. Full on. And they’re fearless over there, they take some really big swings on ‘Strange New Worlds.’ They’re animated at the beginning and at the end. It’s a clever and simple product. It’s not really ‘Roger Rabbit’ because what happens is these guys come over, and they’re humans, and you accept them as soon as they’re on the Enterprise. God, the two of them have got great energy, and it freed up the acting company on ‘Strange New Worlds’ to play more broadly,” said Frakes. “Anson’s [Mount] a wonderful comedian, very dry, but so is Rebecca [Romijn]. It encouraged Ethan [Peck] and everyone; there were just a lot of positives that came out of them having the guts to do a full-on comedy, let alone a crossover with an animated show.”
Producer Akiva Goldsman hinted at the possibility of more crossovers in the future, stating, “I am open to crossing over into other series timelines. I think our rule is that it can’t just be fan service, although we do love pleasing the fans. There must be a compelling storytelling reason for it, and I believe there are many opportunities for that.”
