Timothy Olyphant Seemingly Has No Regrets Missing Out on a Franchise Spanning Over 10 Films

Exploring the production history of certain franchises and envisioning Hollywood in alternate dimensions can be a particularly exciting endeavor. Perhaps in some other timeline, actors and writers are actually receiving fair compensation for their work. But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves there.

Nevertheless, just imagine a world where Al Pacino was the one manning the Millennium Falcon, or John Travolta’s mother imparted the famous line about life being like a box of chocolates, or even if the renowned Tom Hiddleston had wielded Mjölnir instead of Chris Hemsworth. Believe it or not, all of these possibilities were nearly realized.

In one of those parallel universes, Timothy Olyphant’s name is almost inseparable from the concept of “family.” Yes, the Justified star was originally considered for the role of Dominic Toretto in Fast & Furious, thanks to his appearance in Gone in 60 Seconds. However, he ultimately declined the offer, paving the way for Vin Diesel to step up and make history.

Now, after more than two decades, with half as many movies and a substantial amount of profit amassed by the Fast & Furious franchise, one can’t help but wonder if Olyphant regrets his decision not to be part of one of the most lucrative series today.

As it turns out, he’s not bothered at all. In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Olyphant expressed his joy that the role went to Diesel, considering the incredible success the leading man has helped the film series achieve. He even questioned whether it would have reached the same heights if he had accepted the role.

“No, they would not. It feels like part of what makes the Fast & Furious franchise what it is… Vin Diesel is just unlike anything out there. I remember thinking, ‘I can’t make this work, why would I be in this?’ at the time, but yeah, it seems like they got the right guy.”

Although we’re glad that Diesel played a pivotal role in elevating the audacious franchise to its current status, a part of us will always wonder about the unique contributions Olyphant could have brought to the table. Let’s hope that in some alternate dimension, our diverse movie experiences are being enriched by Olyphant’s portrayal of Dominic Toretto.
