Intel just made a huge comeback, and it’s bad news for AMD

Recent market research from Jon Peddie Research suggests that the client CPU market may be rebounding, with Intel making significant gains while AMD experiences losses.

The PC market as a whole has been struggling following the peak it reached during the pandemic. The global economic situation has impacted CPU and GPU sales, and Intel has been hit particularly hard, reporting a $2.8 billion loss in the first quarter of 2023. However, there is some positive news in terms of CPU shipments.

In the second quarter of 2023, CPU shipments increased by 17%, rising from 46 million units to 53.6 million units. This growth impacts both Intel and AMD, with laptops accounting for 72% of overall share and mobile processors dominating at 72% while desktop CPUs claim 28%. Additionally, integrated GPU shipments saw a 14% increase, which is not surprising given that many processors include an iGPU.

Compared to AMD, Intel saw a quarter-to-quarter increase of 23% in CPU market share, while AMD experienced a 5.3% decline. However, when considering the same period from the previous year, the numbers present a bleak outlook, with a 23% decline in all client-based processors, including a 25% drop in desktop chips and a 22% drop in laptop CPUs.

It’s important to note that these numbers reflect CPU shipments, not sales. In terms of sales, AMD has recently gained significant market share in Germany with its Ryzen desktop CPUs, surpassing Intel. Global sales figures between the two manufacturers are harder to determine, as accurate data is scarce and infrequent. It’s no secret that AMD currently produces some of the best processors, which are highly regarded by gamers.

Will Intel continue to gain momentum in the market? It’s a possibility, but not a guarantee. While AMD’s next-generation Zen 5 CPUs won’t be released for another year, Intel is rumored to have a Raptor Lake refresh coming soon, followed by Meteor Lake chips for laptops. However, AMD will expand its presence in the mobile segment with Phoenix APUs and Dragon Range CPUs, and might also introduce lower-end Ryzen desktop chips. For now, Intel has the upper hand, but the numbers at the start of 2024 will be interesting to see.
