TikTokers Push Castor Oil As An Eye Remedy, Here Are The Problems

The hashtag #castoroilforeyesight has already gained over 3.7 million views on TikTok, but just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s safe or effective. People on TikTok have been promoting the use of castor oil for various eye issues, even though it’s approved by the FDA as a laxative and not specifically for eye problems. These claims lack scientific evidence and there are risks associated with putting castor oil in your eyes.

One TikToker named Lauren Kissee claimed that castor oil can improve vision and described how she applies it to her eyelids and around her eyes. However, she failed to provide any concrete scientific studies to support her claims. Another TikToker, @mellysandford, claimed that castor oil made her eyelashes thicker but didn’t offer any evidence to back up her statement. It’s important to question these claims and demand actual scientific evidence before believing them.

Castor oil itself is not harmful and has been used for various purposes throughout history, such as a fuel for lamps and as a punishment in colonial times. It does have some medical uses, including as a laxative. However, it’s not as commonly used today due to the availability of safer alternatives.

Just because castor oil is used as a component in some eye drops doesn’t mean it’s safe to use on its own. The properties of a substance can change when it’s combined with other ingredients, and eye drops typically contain much smaller amounts of castor oil than what TikTokers are recommending.

While laboratory studies have demonstrated potential benefits of ricinoleic acid (the main component of castor oil) in terms of pain reduction and anti-inflammatory properties, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ready for use on humans. It’s crucial to approach TikTok health trends with a critical scientific eye and demand specific studies and evidence to support claims. Without solid evidence, it’s likely just another unsubstantiated claim.
