Blizzard’s Steam Debut Stumbles Hard as Overwatch 2 Becomes “Worst-Reviewed” Title

Blizzard Entertainment’s foray into the Steam platform has been met with significant criticism, as Overwatch 2 has quickly become the lowest-rated game on Valve’s platform.

The game has amassed approximately 70,000 reviews, with only 10% of them being positive. Overwatch 2 has now overtaken “War of the Three Kingdoms” to claim the infamous title of the “worst-rated game” of all time on Steam. The game has been plagued by a wave of “review bombing,” with players expressing their dissatisfaction with Blizzard’s approach to the sequel and their discontent with the lack of in-game content.

“They released Overwatch 2 as a free-to-play model, heavily relying on microtransactions, overpriced skins, and predatory behavior. To make matters worse, they discontinued the first game, rendering it unplayable for those who purchased it, forcing the player base to adopt this free-to-play model to continue playing the game.”

In addition to this criticism, gamers have voiced their grievances regarding the decision to largely abandon the highly anticipated PvE Hero mode, which was believed to be the primary reason for the sequel’s existence. To compensate for this, Blizzard did introduce three different PvE missions, but at a price of $15, which many users deem unworthy of their time and money.

While some reviews provide constructive criticism, many of them deviate from discussing Overwatch 2 itself and instead focus on the Activision-Blizzard acquisition by Microsoft and the reports of sexual harassment within the company. While these factors hold significance, they should not be listed as negative points in a review of a specific game. Valve’s moderation is likely to remove such reviews.

Initially, Blizzard had hoped to expand Overwatch 2’s user base by launching on Steam. However, this initiative has backfired for now. The company’s decision to prioritize Overwatch 2 as its first Steam title stirs up a whole argument, but we won’t delve into the details at this time. We anticipate that with the release of Overwatch 2: Invasion, improvements may occur, as it is the game’s largest update and will introduce new in-game content.
