Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for the finale of Season 3 of Ted Lasso.
Ted Lasso Season 3 drew out the Roy, Jamie, and Keeley love triangle, but the final episode left the storyline unresolved. Although certain elements were addressed, the plot was dropped halfway through the episode to focus on Ted’s farewell, which is understandable but disappointing if this turns out to be the show’s final season. The love triangle’s unfulfilling ending leaves us wondering how much more these characters need to grow before they can move on.
The finale had a great scene between Roy and Jamie at a bar, which tested the growth of both characters. They reflected on their journey together and opened up about their continued interest in Keeley, but ultimately reverted to their immature selves, resulting in a fight and Keeley kicking them both out. This served as the ultimate test for their characters, but it was hardly addressed after that, providing an unfulfilling end to their arcs.
Roy’s character growth has been significant across Lasso’s three seasons, with the Lasso Effect chipping away at his anger and allowing him to be more transparent with his emotions. The finale featured Roy joining the Diamond Dogs and seeking guidance from Dr. Sharon, highlighting his growth. But with all this in mind, it’s unclear how much more character growth Roy needs before reuniting with Keeley.
Jamie has also been significantly impacted by the Lasso Effect, developing leadership abilities and learning the value of commitment. As he’s grown, he needs to learn to let go of his feelings for Keeley, but it’s obvious that her feelings are stronger for Roy. Jamie deserves a storyline that reflects his growth, rather than keeping his romantic eyes fixed on a relationship of the past.
The love triangle has been carefully plotted since the show began, so it’s odd that it remains unresolved in a finale where every other storyline seemed to conclude. The potential for the storyline to drag onto future seasons or spin-offs makes it feel drawn out, and we can only hope for a fulfilling conclusion one day.
