Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Square Enix Claims That Replay is Unnecessary

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake made its debut on Steam a year ago, allowing players to relive a cherished childhood game in an updated form. Fans of the RPG genre have been eagerly anticipating the sequel after Square Enix’s announcement. The question on everyone’s minds is whether previous knowledge of the first game is necessary to understand its sequel.

While many hopeful players of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have already played Remake, others may be excited for the sequel without having played the first installment. Fans are curious about whether they should brush up on Remake before diving into Rebirth. Square Enix has acknowledged these questions and responded directly on social media.

On the official Twitter for Final Fantasy 7, co-director Motomu Toriyama responds to fans in a post, addressing the frequently asked question, “Do I need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake to enjoy Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?” Toriyama asserts that players do not need to play Remake before playing Rebirth.

The co-director explains that the developers “have made preparations so that players who did not get a chance to play the first game can fully enjoy Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.” Despite the intricate storyline of Final Fantasy 7, fans can experience Rebirth as a separate game with its unique lore.

Many people responded positively to the developer’s update. However, despite their initial enthusiasm, some fans expressed concern and uncertainty about the decision. They wonder how the story will flow if they do not require any information from the first game. Others left emojis reflecting their own doubts.

As a fan of the Final Fantasy series, I am excited for Rebirth and can understand why players might be confused about how the game will rely on itself as a standalone experience. I trust that good writing can accomplish the task. My concerns lie more with the release of Rebirth itself, as someone who only uses a PC and does not have PlayStation. How can a game have a platform where its sequel will not be? Is it fair to those of us who have spent a lot of money on Remake?

Square Enix has not yet discussed the possibility of Rebirth joining its predecessor on the PC after the PlayStation release. Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Steam started as an almost impossible feat, but still happened. Therefore, I do not believe that Rebirth can stay exclusive for long. Similarly, Final Fantasy 16’s release on non-console platforms is uncertain, and fans will have to wait long after the PlayStation release to play it on their computers.

Hopefully, Square Enix will keep listening to the community, as it did with Toriyama’s tweet. We are a community of players from all backgrounds who want to experience the Final Fantasy world, not just those with consoles. If you, like me, do not have a PlayStation, you can also check out our favorite Final Fantasy games on PC while waiting for more information on the Steam port.
