The Return of Infection in Halo Infinite: A Sneak Peek

343 Industries Releases Exciting Update on the Revamped Infection Mode in Halo Infinite

Throughout my life, I’ve had many delightful experiences, from playing Halo in high school to constructing my own LAN cable. One of the standout moments was when Infection, the thrilling humans vs. zombies mode, was introduced to the series. Now, to the delight of fans, Infection is making a comeback in Halo Infinite, and the talented development team at 343 Industries has recently shared some exciting details about the mode’s return.

Exploring Infection Mode in Halo

Infection mode made its debut in Halo 2 and remained a beloved feature in subsequent games until the launch of Halo Infinite. It is a two-team game mode that pits humans against a team of zombies. Here’s a concise description from 343 explaining why Infection mode became a fan-favorite:

“At the start, everyone begins as a survivor, except for the Alpha Infected. If the Alpha Infected eliminates you, you switch sides and become an Infected. The goal is simple: Can the survivors endure until the end of the round, as they face diminishing numbers against the Infected? This leads to intense and thrilling moments, akin to ‘last man standing, get to the chopper’ scenarios.”

With its release during the zombie resurgence in the 2000s, Infection mode quickly gained massive popularity within the gaming community and remained a staple of the Halo franchise for over a decade.

The Return of Infection: How and Why

343 Industries acknowledges that many members of their development team, who started as fans, honed their skills through playing Infection. They understood the mode’s significance to the Halo community. As a result, bringing back Infection became a priority for them.

Interestingly, this new iteration of Infection incorporates a narrative aspect:

“In this version of Infection, there is a narrative reason behind the Spartans turning against each other. The Season 3 story concluded with the Banished AI, Iratus, infiltrating the Spartan training simulation and seizing control. This storyline is reflected in the appearance and voiceovers of the Infected players, creating an altered reality.”

I must say, this concept reminds me of the Maverick episodes from the Mega Man X series. I appreciate the emphasis on integrating Infection’s return within the game’s lore, rather than just adding it to playlists and calling it a day. Mechanically, there are also some changes, such as weapons spawning “on the bodies of fallen Spartans throughout the map,” adding depth to the gameplay as players scavenge from their fallen comrades.

In addition, players can look forward to nine remixed maps that emphasize the Infection theme, featuring barricades and new sections. For instance, one notable change is the addition of new tunnels to Behemoth.

Release Date for Infection in Halo Infinite

Infection will be available at the start of Season 4 on June 20.

Season 4 will also introduce more maps, additional equipment, and a career rank system, offering an even more immersive and rewarding experience for players.
