Sony strategically released the horror sequel, “Insidious: The Red Door,” in over 3,000 theaters during a brief lull between major film releases. The movie exceeded expectations by earning over $15 million on its first day, including $5 million from Thursday previews. It is predicted to have an impressive opening weekend of over $30 million, surpassing initial projections of around $25 million.
In fact, this opening weekend figure would slightly surpass the $29 million earned by its predecessor, “Insidious: The Last Key,” during its opening weekend in 2018. The first installment of the “Insidious” franchise, directed by James Wan, earned $13 million in its opening weekend and went on to make just under $100 million worldwide in 2011. “Insidious: Chapter 2” set a franchise record with a $40 million debut weekend and a global total of $161 million at the box office.
As expected for the fifth installment of a horror franchise, “Insidious 5” has received mixed reviews, currently holding a “rotten” score of 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. Collider’s Nate Richard noted that while the film may not be the scariest in the series, it offers a more relatable human element. Interestingly, “Insidious 5” marks Patrick Wilson’s directorial debut, who also stars in the Conjuring franchise.
In competition with “Insidious 5,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” – the latest installment in the Indiana Jones franchise – earned $7.6 million on its second Friday, bringing its domestic total to over $100 million. It is expected to reach $120 million by the end of the weekend, despite facing a 58% decline in its second weekend – the largest decline in the franchise’s history.
Additionally, the faith-based film “Sound of Freedom,” starring Jim Caviezel, experienced a strong debut with over $11 million on July 4. On Friday, the movie gained momentum and is projected to secure third place with $4.7 million. “Sound of Freedom” could reach $36 million by the end of the weekend, a remarkable achievement for a niche film targeting right-wing conspiracy theorists.
The top five films at the box office this weekend also include Disney’s “Elemental” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” While “Elemental” has shown signs of improvement after a weak opening, reaching $102 million domestically, “Across the Spider-Verse” continues to perform strongly with a total of $352 million. On the other hand, Lionsgate’s R-rated comedy “Joy Ride” failed to capitalize on the success of “No Hard Feelings” in recent weeks, debuting outside the top five with $2.6 million on Friday.
