Renowned horror filmmaker James Wan has provided some intriguing insights into the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved Conjuring spin-off, The Nun II.
Admit it. The Nun may not have fully lived up to the potential of its chilling Conjuring predecessor, despite delivering one of the franchise’s most memorable scares during its cameo in the sequel. However, with the announcement of a sequel, there’s hope for a better follow-up, as the Annabelle spin-off franchise found its stride after a misstep.
Fortunately, it seems that the second chapter of The Nun will amp up the horror to deliver an even scarier experience.
James Wan Teases Terrifying Storylines in The Nun II
Reflecting on his decade-long involvement in the horror genre, director James Wan reveals in an interview with EW that The Nun II has plenty in store. He explains, “Frenchie has moved on from the first film and is now working as a groundskeeper-handyman at a Catholic school. However, as seen at the end of the first movie, the evil continues to haunt him. It’s slowly resurfacing and he realizes that there’s only one person who can truly help him: Taissa Farmiga’s character. I love their platonic friendship. She deeply cares for him and is willing to do whatever it takes to assist him. But she must also confront the evil and fight it once again.”
Wan further adds, “When I read the script, it genuinely scared me. Sometimes, when reading horror scripts, you can tell that you have the potential to make it frightening, but Akela Cooper’s writing and her interpretation of the world and characters were unsettling in every way. She took everything that worked in The Nun and The Conjuring 2 and elevated it.”
The Nun II will hit theaters on September 8, 2023.
