The Latest on Marvel’s SDCC 2020 Announcements: Updates on Their Current Status

Comic-Con 2023 turned out to be a relatively low-key event for movie and TV news due to the ongoing actors and writers strikes. However, last year’s event saw Marvel Studios drop a bombshell of announcements that got fans excited about Phase 5 and 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Let’s take a look at some of those projects and their current status.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year/Sophomore Year
This Disney+ series will delve into Peter Parker’s early days as Spider-Man. Set in an alternate timeline where Norman Osborn mentors Peter instead of Tony Stark, the series was initially announced for a 2021 release. At SDCC 2022, we learned that it would debut in 2024. While there haven’t been many updates since then, it seems to be on track for its scheduled release.

What If…? Seasons 2 and 3
The alt-reality animated series “What If…?” was confirmed for a second season at SDCC 2022, with an expected release date of early 2023. However, the release date has since been changed to “coming soon,” leaving fans eagerly awaiting more details. A Marvel Zombies episode, based on the comic book story, was also teased.

X-Men ’97
The beloved ’90s animated series, X-Men, is getting a continuation titled X-Men ’97. The show is set to release in Fall 2023, and a second season has already been announced. A clip unveiled at SDCC 2022 hinted at Magneto taking over as the new leader of the X-Men.

Loki Season 2, Echo, Ironheart, and Agatha: Coven of Chaos
Disney+ shows Loki Season 2, Echo, Ironheart, and Agatha: Coven of Chaos had initial release dates set for 2023. However, Loki and Echo have been pushed back to October 6, 2023, and November 29, 2023, respectively. Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Ironheart, on the other hand, have been delayed to 2024.

Captain America: Brave New World
Continuing the story from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” a new Captain America movie starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson is set to release in July 2024. The movie was initially titled “Captain America: New World Order” but has since been changed to “Captain America: Brave New World.” Notable cast members include Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Harrison Ford, Liv Tyler, and Shira Haas.

Blade
The Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali has faced some setbacks since its initial announcement in 2019. After delays and director changes, the film is now set for a February 14, 2025 release. Ali did make a cameo as Blade’s voice in the post-credits scene of “Eternals” in 2021.

Daredevil: Born Again
Fans were thrilled to see Charlie Cox return as Daredevil in various Marvel projects. In addition to voicing the character in the animated “Spider-Man: Freshman Year,” Cox will star in his own 18-episode live-action show titled “Daredevil: Born Again” in Spring 2024. The release date is still on track, but the strikes may impact production timelines.

Thunderbolts
Kevin Feige confirmed a Thunderbolts movie as the conclusion of Phase 5 of the MCU. While it was already rumored prior to SDCC, the official announcement at the event got fans buzzing. However, no release date has been revealed yet.

Despite the uncertainties caused by the strikes, Marvel Studios has an exciting lineup of projects in the works. Fans will have to stay tuned for further updates and developments.
