‘The Last Of Us’ Receives Steam Deck Certification with Latest Update

A recent update for The Last of Us on PC has delivered numerous bug fixes and enhancements, resulting in the game being verified for Steam Deck compatibility.

Upon its release on PC in March, The Last of Us: Part 1 faced several issues, with players labeling it as “unplayable” and leaving mostly negative reviews on its Steam page. Initially, Valve designated the game as “unsupported” for the Steam Deck, indicating the need for substantial improvements.

Since then, Naughty Dog has been diligently working on resolving bugs and implementing improvements. Through a combination of hotfixes and recent patches, the game’s stability has increased, and various player-highlighted issues have been addressed. Nevertheless, Naughty Dog prioritized enhancing the quality of the PC version before pursuing Steam Deck verification.

In a statement, Naughty Dog acknowledged the dissatisfaction among players and expressed their commitment to providing the expected and deserving quality. They also mentioned their focus on fixes and patches before submitting the game for Steam Deck verification.

In an update on April 3, 2023, Naughty Dog confirmed their dedication to resolving issues and assured players that they would be kept informed about the Steam Deck status of The Last of Us Part 1.

Now, it appears that these improvements have had a positive impact overall, including on the Steam Deck. Valve currently lists The Last of Us: Part 1 as “verified” for Steam Deck, although version 1.1.0 will require a full shader rebuild, necessitating a loading process when playing the game.

According to the patch notes, here are the enhancements provided by the new update for Steam Deck:

– Overall performance improvements while playing on Steam Deck
– Resolved a memory leak issue that could cause crashes
– Fixed misaligned button prompts
– Rectified an issue where changing the graphics preset could trigger intense lighting effects
– Ensured in-game HUD matches the Steam Deck Performance Overlay FPS value
– Fixed a crash that occurred during loading screens
– Defaulted Effects Density to Very Low instead of Low
– Fixed a crash at the start of a cutscene in Lakeside Resort
– Fixed a crash at certain checkpoints in Pittsburgh
– Addressed an issue where locked FPS made it difficult to move pushable objects in The Outskirts

The full patch notes reveal a comprehensive assortment of bug fixes and improvements, with a notable highlight being optimization for both CPU and GPU performance.

Despite a rocky start on PC, The Last of Us remains highly popular and has already been approved for a second season of the HBO TV series.
