The Impact of AI on the Content You Encounter on Facebook and Instagram

Facebook and Instagram can sometimes feel a little eerie. You might be chatting about your biking trip to Leh or your new pair of sneakers, and suddenly you start seeing ads and promoted posts about Ladakh or a sneaker store in your Facebook feed. This is all thanks to the algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) at play. The parent company of Facebook, Meta, has now provided an explanation of how AI influences your feed. According to Meta, they want to challenge the misconception that algorithms make people powerless over their content.

In a blog post, Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs at Meta, explained the role of AI in shaping your feed. He stated, “Our AI systems predict how valuable a piece of content might be to you, so we can show it to you sooner. For example, if you share a post, it indicates that you found it interesting, and our systems take that into account when predicting what you will share.”

Clegg emphasized that there is no single prediction to determine content value. Meta uses a variety of predictions, including behavior and user feedback from surveys. This allows them to get as close as possible to providing content that is relevant and valuable to each individual user.

Meta asserts that people’s experience with their products is personalized based on their activity, as everyone has different preferences and interests that may change over time.

You have control over what you see

Meta has introduced 22 system cards that explain how AI functions in your feed. These system cards provide information on how AI ranks content, the predictions each system makes to determine relevance, and the controls you can utilize to customize your experience. Nick Clegg mentioned that these cards cover various features like Feed, Stories, Reels, and other content surfaces where users find posts from the accounts they follow.

To further allow customization, Meta has created centralized places on Facebook and Instagram where users can adjust controls that influence the content they see on each app. Users can access their Feed Preferences on Facebook and the Suggested Content Control Center on Instagram through the three-dot menu on relevant posts or via the Settings.
