When Samsung introduces a Fan Edition (FE) version of a device, they typically downgrade the hardware to offer it at a lower price. However, the upcoming Galaxy Tab S9 FE might break that pattern. A recent leak suggests that the tablet may not have a significant price drop compared to its base model.
The leak comes from industry insider Roland Quandt on Twitter, who claims that a Wi-Fi only Tab S9 FE with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage could cost 63,000 INR (Indian Rupee), approximately $760 USD. This means the downgraded tablet could be just $40 cheaper than the standard Galaxy Tab S9 at its lowest price point, and $60 more expensive than the Galaxy Tab S8. Surprisingly, the Tab S9 has better overall hardware. This news might disappoint those who wanted to try Samsung’s next-gen tablets at an affordable cost. If these leaks turn out to be true, it might be better to consider the Tab S8 instead.
Dubious claim
There is a possibility that this information could be misunderstood. According to a report from GSMArena, “Indian customers normally pay a lot more for Samsung tablets than Americans.” Considering this disparity, the actual price of the Galaxy Tab S9 FE could be closer to $600. Although still more expensive than its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE, it would be more manageable than $760.
GSMArena’s claim holds some truth when comparing the cost of Samsung tablets in India and the United States. For example, the Galaxy Tab S9 costs 72,999 INR (over $880) in India, while the base model is priced at $799 in the US. Therefore, the final price of the Tab S9 FE might not be as high as initially predicted. Hopefully, Samsung will offer it at a mid-range price rather than a high-end one.
In addition to the price concerns, there have been other leaks about the tablet. Samsung’s French website accidentally confirmed the existence of the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and a FE Plus model. The pricing for the latter is yet to be revealed. The device’s model was also spotted on the FCC website by 9to5Google, suggesting an imminent launch, possibly earlier than expected in early Autumn. It’s important to take these leaks with a grain of salt, as things can always change last minute.
