Red Dead Redemption Is Coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17, No PC Release in Sight

In an exciting announcement, Red Dead Redemption will be making its way to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17. However, it’s important to note that this is not a remake or a highly anticipated remastered version. Instead, it is a port of the original game released in 2010, including the Undead Nightmare zombie add-on. The responsibility for this new port falls to Double Eleven Studios, a studio founded by ex-Rockstar developers, who have previously worked on successful games like Lego Harry Potter and Minecraft Dungeons.

Unfortunately, fans of the game will be disappointed to learn that there are no visual or quality-of-life upgrades, no multiplayer options, and no mention of 60fps support. This lack of improvements is particularly surprising considering the game runs at that frame rate on emulators. Understandably, there has been backlash from fans who were hoping for new features in a potential remake or remaster. Furthermore, the port comes with a steep price tag of $49.99 (approximately Rs. 4,140), which is significantly higher compared to the $29.99 (approximately Rs. 1,499) price on the Xbox store. This has led some to believe that the port is merely a cash grab, especially following the poor reception of Rockstar’s previous remaster, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

In the gaming community, Lance McDonald, a renowned dataminer, showcased his skills by creating a 60fps patch for Bloodborne on the PS5 without any upscaling on the footage. Taking note of Rockstar Games’ announcement of the Red Dead Redemption port, McDonald expressed his thoughts on Twitter, suggesting that if hobbyists can achieve such feats without official support, Sony should easily be able to do the same. He points out that Microsoft had no trouble patching Dark Souls 3 to run at 60fps on the Xbox Series X. Another video game modder named ‘illusion’ was also able to run RDR2 at 60fps on a hacked PS5, a feat that Rockstar should have accomplished long ago considering the 60fps standard for current-gen consoles.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Red Dead Redemption 2 serves as a prequel to the original game. It follows the story of former outlaw John Marston, who embarks on a journey throughout America’s vast Western region to find the last remaining members of the Van der Linde gang. The game introduced the Honor system, which meant NPCs would react differently based on John’s actions, rewarding positive behavior and condemning immoral choices. The Red Dead Redemption port will also include support for additional languages, such as Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Latin American Spanish. Additionally, the game will be playable on the PS5 and has been given a new title, “Rockstar Games Presents: Red Dead Redemption,” sparking speculation about a potential remaster release.

Excitingly, Red Dead Redemption will be available on the PS4 and Nintendo Switch starting from August 17.
