‘The Flash’ Begins with Slow Opening at Domestic Box Office

Warner Bros’ ambitious attempt at rebooting the DC Extended Universe, the highly anticipated superhero film “The Flash,” is not meeting the studio’s expectations. Despite grossing $24.5 million on Friday, the film is projected to have a debut weekend haul of $60 million, which is lower than the $26.8 million that “Black Adam” earned on its opening day. However, “The Flash” did outperform “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which earned $11.7 million. These numbers are a significant decline from the franchise’s heyday, where films like “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” made $56 million and $81 million respectively on their opening days.

“The Flash” was projected to gross a little over $70 million in its opening weekend, which is considered low for a film of this magnitude. The movie carries a lot of expectations, and Warner Bros. faced various challenges leading up to its release. Star Ezra Miller’s personal troubles generated negative press, and the declining interest in the franchise was not helping either. To generate buzz and highlight “The Flash” as a must-watch film, the studio secured endorsements from renowned figures such as Stephen King, Tom Cruise, and James Gunn. Additionally, the trailers promising the return of Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s Batmen added to the excitement.

However, the movie’s reviews have been mediocre. It currently holds a “fresh” rating of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes and received a B CinemaScore from opening day audiences. Collider’s Ross Bonaime commented in his review that the film lacks a cohesive narrative. With a reported budget of $200 million, “The Flash” will need to perform exceptionally well to surpass the competition in the crowded summer season.

In terms of box office rankings, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is expected to claim the second spot this weekend with $8.1 million in earnings. The animated superhero sequel aims to outperform Disney-Pixar’s latest original film, “Elemental,” which earned $11.6 million on Friday. Pixar has struggled to deliver a hit since the release of “Toy Story 4” in 2019 due to the impact of the pandemic.

On the other hand, Paramount’s “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” experienced a massive 74% drop in earnings, slipping from the number one spot to number four. The film grossed $5.2 million on its second Friday, resulting in a domestic total of $85 million. It is too early to determine the film’s success or failure, but Paramount has high hopes for the movie, as they have planned an entire new trilogy and a crossover project teased at the end of the film. Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is expected to outperform the new release “The Blackening” and secure a top-five finish.

In other box office news, director Wes Anderson’s latest film, “Asteroid City,” achieved impressive per-screen averages after its limited release in six theaters. The star-studded comedy drama, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, earned $350,000 on Friday, with a per-screen average of $120,000.
