Gareth Edwards’ latest sci-fi feature The Creator is very timely, it comes out at a time when the conversation around the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence is rampant, and rightfully so. The movie has had mixed reviews, however, it seems to be one which you need to see to decide for yourself. Set in 2017, the feature follows Joshua (John David Washington) who is tasked to hunt down and kill the Creator, who has developed a mysterious world-ending weapon. To give fans a taste of the feature, Fandangi has released an extended preview of the feature.
The movie starts with the definition of the word ‘Nirmata,’ which translates to the creator in Nepalese, and in the context of the movie, is the “mysterious being worshiped by the AIs” of this universe. In the movie’s opening, we see the origins of artificial intelligence in this world, and their eventual integration into the workforce from hospitals to civil service. Until a nuclear warhead was detonated by the AIs in Los Angeles making the Western world ban AI. However, the Eastern world, dubbed as the “new Asia” in the movie, is still fostering them. We then meet Joshua and see his story unfold.
The first few minutes of the feature waste no time in setting up a very thrilling conflict that scars Joshua for life. Going into the movie the stakes will only rise, and it’ll be interesting to see how Edwards tackles the themes of ethics, morality, and human-AI relationships. The production design looks incredible with a very futuristic approach that’s mostly grounded. Washington sets a complex tone for his character right from the start and is supported by many power-packed performers in the cast. The movie made $103.4 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $80 million and has a 76 percent audience score and 66 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
