The Brains Behind 4 Hit Comic Book Projects Says No to Marvel or DC

When it comes to recognizing the most influential and consistent filmmakers in the ongoing boom of the comic book genre, the usual names that come up include Kevin Feige, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, James Gunn, Sam Raimi, the Russo brothers, and others. However, it’s time to give Seth Rogen the respect he deserves.

Even though Rogen hasn’t worked on any Marvel or DC projects, his track record is undeniably impressive. As a writer, director, or producer, he has worked on Preacher, which holds a remarkable four-season average rating of 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. He has also been involved in The Boys, a series that received eight Emmy nominations, and the critically acclaimed Invincible (Certified Fresh on RT with a 98 percent approval rating). Furthermore, his upcoming project Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem currently has a 96 percent approval rating.

Although his venture into onscreen superheroism with The Green Hornet turned out to be a disaster, Rogen’s behind-the-scenes work has consistently delivered. Interestingly, Rogen shared with Polygon that this very reason is why he’s not interested in joining Marvel or DC.

“We have our own specific way of working; Evan and I have been writers for 20 years now. It’s honestly a fear of the process. I say that without knowing much about their process. I love many things about Marvel. It’s mainly a fear of whether we’d fit into their well-established and effective system. Would we eventually become frustrated with it?

What’s exciting about [Mutant Mayhem] is that we are the producers. We have control over the system and the process. This is also appealing to us about The Boys and other major franchise projects we’ve done. We create our own infrastructure and process, rather than fitting into someone else’s. We’re control freaks!”

Considering the outlandish and intense nature of works like Preacher, The Boys, and Invincible, it’s reasonable to assume that Rogen wouldn’t have the same creative freedom working with Marvel or DC. Nevertheless, witnessing him take on one of the big comic book giants would undoubtedly be a sight to behold.
