‘The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri Can’t Wait to Be Part of the MCU’s ‘Thunderbolts’

The Big Picture

  • Ayo Edebiri, known for her role in FX’s The Bear, is gaining recognition with roles in high-budget films and a part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts.
  • Edebiri is thrilled to collaborate with superstars in Thunderbolts and views it as an incredible opportunity for career growth.
  • Thunderbolts is a significant project for Edebiri, serving as a major cinematic event for Phase 5 of the MCU. However, production has been temporarily halted due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.

Following her Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her role as Sydney Adamu in FX’s chaotic work comedy/drama The Bear, Ayo Edebiri is poised for a major breakthrough in her career. She has already secured roles in big-budget films such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and the raunchy comedy Bottoms directed by Emma Seligman. Edebiri’s next big opportunity lies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In January, Edebiri was cast in Thunderbolts in an undisclosed role, joining a star-studded ensemble of A-listers. As per Marvel’s tradition, Edebiri is not allowed to reveal any details about her character or the plot. However, she is eager to absorb knowledge and learn from the experienced actors surrounding her on set. For Edebiri, this is the best possible scenario to further her acting career.

The Biggest Project Yet

Thunderbolts represents Edebiri’s most ambitious project to date, with its grand production scale, star-studded cast, and critical importance to the MCU. The movie is positioned as the culmination of Phase 5, bringing together anti-heroes and villains from Marvel’s extensive catalogue for a cinematic event slated for a summer release (pending the resolution of the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike). Production was originally scheduled to commence in June, but the strike forced a temporary halt to the filming process.

In June, Marvel announced that the movie’s release date had been pushed back from July 26, 2024, to December 20, 2024, due to the strike. Negotiations between the AMPTP and WGA are ongoing, with discussions set to conclude by the end of the week. Edebiri eagerly awaits fair terms for both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, hoping to fully immerse herself in the realm of blockbuster filmmaking.

Currently, viewers can catch Edebiri in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, where she portrays the character April O’Neil. Watch the movie trailer below.
