Amazon has made its Fresh grocery delivery service available to non-Prime members, removing the previous requirement of a $139-per-year Prime membership.
Initially, the service will be available in select cities including Austin, Texas; Boston, Massachusetts; Charlotte, North Carolina; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Nashville, Tennessee; Phoenix, Arizona; Portland, Oregon; Richmond, Virginia; Sacramento, California; San Diego, California; and San Francisco, California. According to a report by Bloomberg, Amazon plans to expand availability nationwide by the end of the year.
Non-Prime members who shop on Fresh and have their items delivered will be charged a delivery fee. Orders under $50 will incur a $14 fee, orders between $50 and $100 will incur an $11 fee, and orders over $100 will be charged $8 for delivery.
The delivery fees for non-Prime members are higher than those for Fresh shoppers with a Prime membership. Prime members are charged a $10 fee for orders under $50, $7 for orders between $50 and $100, and $4 for orders exceeding $100.
Fresh shoppers can select either a two-hour or six-hour window for delivery, with the latter option available at a lower charge.
Amazon stated, “We’re always looking for more ways to make grocery shopping easy, fast, and affordable for all of our customers, and are excited to offer Amazon Fresh grocery delivery to customers without a Prime membership in a dozen U.S. cities.”
Amazon is also planning to integrate its various online supermarket offerings, including Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods, and Amazon.com, to provide customers with a single shopping experience, according to Bloomberg.
In 2007, Amazon entered the grocery sector with the launch of Fresh. Currently, Fresh consists of 44 supermarkets across the U.S. In 2017, Amazon acquired Whole Foods for $13.7 billion, and the company also operates a number of cashier-less Go convenience stores.
Amazon recently laid off several Fresh employees from stores nationwide and closed down eight Go stores. However, the company has emphasized its commitment to the grocery business.
