[Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts] Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has already made waves in the industry for the exciting crossover it promises with the beloved G.I. Joe franchise. However, what fans might not know is that the inclusion of G.I. Joe was not always guaranteed. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently shared in an interview with Collider that the scene was initially intended to feature the Transformers agency, Sector Seven.
In the Transformers mythology, Sector Seven is a government-funded department that protects Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Sector Seven was introduced in Michael Bay’s first Transformers movie and was also present in the 2018 soft reboot, Bumblebee. Since the battle against Unicron was a known event in the Transformers universe, it seemed logical to include a secret organization aware of the threat, and Sector Seven fit that bill perfectly. As di Bonaventura explains, “until the very last moment, that mindblowing scene ‘was always debated on between Sector Seven and G.I. Joe. Because it could have easily been Sector Seven.”
Since the creative team was uncertain about how the audiences would react to this crossover, two versions of the scene were shot – one with Sector Seven, and the other with G.I. Joe. Ultimately, the decision was made to go with G.I. Joe, and the scene was easily switched using a card in post-production.
“We waited to shoot that scene until in post, in part, because we wanted to see the movie. There were definitely three different ways you could have ended this picture, and so we kind of waited until we wanted to see what the climax of the volcano was gonna feel like, didn’t understand how far we could go.”
During the interview, di Bonaventura revealed that there were always discussions about bringing G.I. Joe characters into the Transformers universe. The creative team wondered if it would be better to play it safe and waited to see how audiences reacted before making a final decision. However, our inner children and fans of the franchises will be glad they took the risk, as the upcoming Transformers trilogy just became much more exciting with the addition of G.I. Joe characters.
“Part of what we wanted to find out is how is the audience gonna respond to it. And so, we weren’t sure which was going to be, frankly, the better button. It was always fun to imagine that we were gonna do G.I. Joe at some point coming into the Transformers world, or the combining in some way or form, but it was definitely an active debate for a long, long time…in terms of when. And then, in this movie, should we?” says di Bonaventura.
With the Maximals already on board and now G.I. Joe characters ready to show up, the next Transformers movie promises to be an explosive good time.
